Die Begleitpublikation zum Deutschen Pavillon auf der 9. Internationalen Architekturausstellung 2004 in Venedig gibt einen Überblick über mehr als 35 zeitgenössische deutsche Architekturprojekte an städtischen Randgebieten, in suburbanen oder deindustrialisierten Zonen. Sie lassen die Transformation und Reaktivierung profaner Alltagsarchitektur - Gewerbegebiete, Einfamilienhäuser oder technische Bauten - und konventioneller Bauformen erkennen und eröffnen eine neue Wahrnehmung der »Deutschlandschaft«. Architektonische Normen und Regeln werden mit ironischer Selbstreflexion neu formuliert und erfahren eine ästhetische Wendung. Von einer kritischen jungen Generation deutscher Architekten gebaut, zeigen die Projekte einen höchst innovativen Umgang mit neuen Materialien: Suburbane »Plug-Ins« - temporäre und mobile Architekturen - wurden generiert, Bekanntes geschickt umgearbeitet und so provokative Lösungen für bisher unterbewertete Areale gefunden.
