Leo Villareal (*1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) ist ein Pionier auf dem Gebiet der künstlerischen Verwendung von LED-Leuchten und computergesteuerter Bilderzeugung; er ist bekannt für seine Lichtskulpturen und architektonischen, ortsbezogenen Arbeiten. Mitte der 1990er-Jahre begann er mit wegbereitenden Projekten im Bereich virtuelle Realität. Das Gegenkultur-Festival Burning Man inspirierte ihn zu groß angelegten Erlebnisinstallationen: 1997 programmierte er für das Festival eine Struktur aus Stroboskoplichtern, die zunächst nur als eine Art pulsierendes Nachtlicht gedacht war, jedoch sehr erfolgreich und zum Vorläufer für seine späteren Lichtarbeiten wurde. Die Veröffentlichung untersucht, wie genau Villareal seine Vorstellung von einer Kunst umsetzt, die auf Innovationen des 21.
