COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the course, Provide Brief Interventions for Behaviour Change. This program is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and ethical considerations necessary to conduct successful brief interventions across various contexts. Brief interventions are a crucial aspect of public health strategies aimed at promoting positive behaviour change and improving overall well-being. This course covers a wide range of topics essential for professionals involved in supporting individuals through brief intervention processes.
In Section A, participants will gain an understanding of the scope and process of brief interventions, including their features, role as a public health strategy, and reasons for their effectiveness.
The step-by-step process of conducting brief interventions will be explored, along with record-keeping requirements, stages of behaviour change models, options and approaches to support behaviour change, and considerations for health and well-being.
Participants will also delve into broader contexts influencing a person's behaviour, identify barriers and challenges for positive intervention outcomes, and learn strategies to address these challenges while maintaining legal and ethical standards.
Section B focuses on practical skills and strategies for conducting effective brief interventions. Participants will learn how to discuss and determine issues of concern with individuals and assess their stage in the decision to change. They will identify resources required for supporting brief interventions, plan appropriate strategies based on the person's needs, and raise awareness of health issues.
Conducting brief motivational interviews, supporting individuals in exploring choices and setting goals, identifying relapse prevention strategies, and providing ongoing support and encouragement are key components covered in this section. Participants will also learn how to maintain accurate notes, ensure confidentiality and security of information, regularly review progress, and discuss outcomes with individuals in an appropriate manner.
In addition, participants will learn how to apply their knowledge and skills by undertaking the brief intervention process for individuals presenting with different issues at various stages of the change process. They will utilise active listening, non-judgmental language, a supportive approach, and facilitation techniques to assist individuals in their decision-making process and promote positive behaviour change effectively.
By the end of this course, participants will be well-equipped to conduct effective brief interventions, support behaviour change, and promote overall well-being while adhering to legal and ethical considerations.
This course is designed to align with the content outlined in the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency CHCCCS014.
