INTRODUCTION:

This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, mixing and applying protective and decorative paint finishes by brush and roller in accordance with work instructions, substrate requirements, paint material requirements, workplace procedures, manufacturer recommendations and safety requirements.
Producing protective and decorative paint finishes by brush and roller involves reviewing work instructions, preparing paint materials and substrates, selecting suitable PPE, tools and equipment, protecting surrounding areas and applying paint to the required finish standard. In real workplace practice, this skill area is important because brush and roller application must achieve the required opacity, texture, sheen, colour, thickness, sharpness and defect standard while controlling hazards, ventilation, fire and explosion risks, dust, waste and material storage.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to review work instructions; apply safety, environmental, manufacturer and workplace requirements; work responsibly in heritage-listed buildings; select PPE, tools and equipment; inspect worksites and control hazards; identify, calculate, prepare, mix and safely handle paints; check substrates and materials against requirements; protect surrounding surfaces and removed items; manage ventilation, fire, explosion and dust controls; select brush, roller or combined methods; apply finishes to required opacity, texture, sheen, thickness, colour, sharpness and defect standards; and complete clean-up, recycling, paint waste disposal, tool maintenance and sealed material storage.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can produce protective and decorative paint finishes by brush and roller by interpreting work instructions, applying required safety and workplace requirements, preparing materials and substrates, protecting surrounding areas, managing heritage, ventilation, fire, explosion and dust considerations, selecting suitable tools and application methods, mixing and applying paint to specified finish standards, and completing clean-up, recycling, disposal, maintenance and safe storage activities according to workplace procedures.
