For nearly a century, Kellogg, Idaho, was home to America's richest silver mine, Sunshine Mine. Mining there, as everywhere, was not an easy life, but regardless of the risk, there was something about being underground, the lure of hitting a deep vein of silver. The promise of good money and the intense bonds of friendship brought men back year after year. Mining is about being a man and a fighter in a job where tomorrow always brings the hope of a big score. On May 2, 1972, 174 miners entered Sunshine Mine on their daily quest for silver. Aboveground, safety engineer Bob Launhardt sat in his office, filing his usual mountain of federal and state paperwork. From his office window he could see the air shafts that fed fresh air into the mine, more than a mile below the surface. The air shafts usually emitted only tiny coughs of exhaust; unlike dangerously combustible coal mines, Sunshine was a fireproof hardrock mine, nothing but cold, dripping wet stone. There were many safety concerns at Sunshine, but fire wasn't one of them. The men and the company swore the mine was unburnable, so when thick black smoke began pouring from one of the air shafts, Launhardt was as amazed as he was alarmed. When the alarm sounded, less than half of the dayshift was able to return to the surface. The others were trapped underground, too deep in the mine to escape. Scores of miners died almost immediately, frozen in place as they drilled, ate lunch, napped, or chatted. No one knew what was burning or where the smoke had come from. But in one of the deepest corners of the mine, Ron Flory and Tom Wilkinson were left alone and in total darkness, surviving off a trickle of fresh air from a borehole. The miners' families waited and prayed, while Launhardt, reeling from the shock of losing so many men on his watch, refused to close up the mine or give up the search until he could be sure that no one was left underground. In The Deep Dark, Gregg Olsen looks beyond the intensely suspenseful story of the fire and rescue to the wounded heart of Kellogg, a quintessential company town that has never recovered from its loss. A vivid and haunting chapter in the history of working-class America, this is one of the great rescue stories of the twentieth century.Binding Type: Paperback

Stylish comfort you can wear all day!
Size: 6.5, Color: Chestnut
My wife has been been wearing the UGG Goldenstar Sandals for a few weeks now, and they’ve totally exceeded expectations. These sandals strike the perfect balance between comfort and style, and she’s gotten so many compliments on them!
Pros:
• Super Comfortable: The cushioned footbed feels like walking on clouds. Perfect for long days on your feet or casual outings.
• Lightweight: Unlike some chunky sandals, these are surprisingly light but still feel supportive and well-made.
• Adjustable Straps: The Velcro straps make it easy to get the perfect fit, and they’re great for swelling feet after a long day.
• Versatile Style: They look great with everything—from jeans and shorts to casual dresses.
• High-Quality Materials: Typical UGG quality—durable suede and solid construction.
Cons:
• Suede Requires Care: The upper is suede, so they’re not ideal for wet conditions and do need a bit of maintenance to keep looking fresh.
• Pricey: They’re on the higher end cost-wise, but I’d say the comfort and quality justify the price.
I’m really happy with these sandals. They’re a perfect mix of fashion and function, and I’d definitely buy them again in another color!

Best Sandal Ever
There is nothing about these that I don't LOVE. These are so comfortable and look so good. I have 6 pairs in every color. They r my absolute favorite. Run true to size. Listen to Amazon about sizing. They know... I am between size 7 and 7.5 and they recommended 7 and it was a perfect fit. I have not had any issues with the Velcro closure. Amazon has the best prices for UGGS.

Sandals that go with just about everything.
As a lover of everything Ugg, these didn't disappoint. They are some of the most comfortable shoes I have, very lightweight, and go with just about everything. They remind me of the old school Dr. Martens and I had a massive collection of those in high school. I have worn them quite a bit and you can barely tell as they are holding up extremely well.

Cute and comfortable!
Size: 6.5, Color: Chestnut
These are cute and surprisingly comfortable! My arches feel supported and the soles don’t feel as block-like as other platform style sandals!
Things to note:
The footbed liner is not made of suede and is a little slippery. It’s like a neoprene liner which was unexpected for an Ugg shoe.
Also, I only intend to wear these sandals as slides (a la Birkenstocks) so the “adjustable” Velcro strap over the top part of the foot seems useless. It doesn’t snug the top down at all, functionally speaking it is only to wear around the back of the ankle. Maybe this matters to someone thinking they could tighten the top down a bit. The ankle strap is comfortable but could be a bit
longer.
Overall they are a cute option to the platform Birks that are very uncomfortable imo. Love the options to order half sizes. I’m usually a 6 in Ugg boots but ordered my regular shoe size 6.5 and they fit well. My heel would be at the very end of my sandal
if I sized down. True to size. Keeping and will order in another color!
