" Trethewey's poems] dig beneath the surface of history--personal or communal, from childhood or from a century ago--to explore the human struggles that we all face." --James H. Billington, 13th Librarian of Congress

Layering joy and urgent defiance--against physical and cultural erasure, against white supremacy whether intangible or graven in stone--Trethewey's work gives pedestal and witness to unsung icons. Monument, Trethewey's first retrospective, draws together verse that delineates the stories of working class African American women, a mixed-race prostitute, one of the first black Civil War regiments, mestizo and mulatto figures in Casta paintings, Gulf coast victims of Katrina. Through the collection, inlaid and inextricable, winds the poet's own family history of trauma and loss, resilience and love.

In this setting, each section, each poem drawn from an "opus of classics both elegant and necessary,"* weaves and interlocks with those that come before and those that follow. As a whole, Monument casts new light on the trauma of our national wounds, our shared history. This is a poet's remarkable labor to source evidence, persistence, and strength from the past in order to change the very foundation of the vocabulary we use to speak about race, gender, and our collective future.

A beautifully written and illustrated tale of kindness, courage and (imaginary) friendship
Format: Hardcover
A beautifully written and illustrated tale of kindness, courage and friendship (even if the friend is in your imagination). This is a great picture book for building self-esteem and for helping early learners to discover ways to overcome obstacles by showing how upbeat confidence boosting self-talk is the way to go. I adore this beautiful family and how the climb up the slide's stairs is so relatable-you just feel the endless up, up, up as you ascend, like climbing up the stairs of the high dive and looking down and just that whoosh of fear that vertakes you from the seemingly dizzying height. I love the kindness on all the adults' faces and the cute expressions from the child. The lion is magnificent. I love that it gives shape to a child’s imaginary friend and that this friend is a true safety net -which is really the child being their own safety net. The end pages are bright orange and sunny, using the cute lion face in the pattern and all the illustrations, which are predominantly blue and yellow/orange illustrations are the perfect backdrop for the tumble of dark curls on the child’s head which allow the size of the lion to appear gigantic, and yet, calm and sweet like a kitty cat. Very sweet book! I love its message of bravery, confidence building and how you can truly be your own best friend.

Sweet Story about facing your fears!
Format: Hardcover
A trusted comrade, a little girl’s lion is always there. Her lion helps her through times of stress, or if she makes a mistake, or if she is nervous. A girl and her lion, the dream team! One day the little girl goes on a new adventure, a brand new slide arrived at the playground and she can’t wait to try it with Lion. The ladder is a bit taller than she thought and with every climb, uncertainty starts to creep in. This slide is so high! How will we ever get down? The young girl wonders. Turning back towards Lion (since this is usually the part her brave lion steps in to help) she notices that he is afraid too! This is such a sweet story about facing your fears! I love the bright yellow and orange with blue color palette. Having a lion inside to symbolize bravery is such a wonderful way to help young readers with facing their fears. We love to teach our children that fear is a healthy response, it’s a message that our body is giving us! It is also healthy to work past that fear (although sometimes we need some help doing just that).

A little girl feels like she can courageously tackle anything with the help of her brave lion. When she climbs a tall slide, however, and her lion becomes afraid, she must summon her own strength to overcome her fear.  I especially love the illustrations in this validating and reassuring read.

Wonderful Picture Book!
Format: Hardcover
During tonight's bedtime reading, the captivating illustrations had my toddler completely engrossed, eagerly demanding, "again, again!" The blend of fun and valuable lessons in the story is truly a standout. It brilliantly addresses concepts of fear and doubt, offering young readers a guide on how to conquer them.
