Beautiful evergreen with a dramatic weeping habit native to Bhutan, where it is the national tree. Survives frosts to 20°, likes full sun, drought tolerant. Typically grows 40-60 feet (though sizes up to 300 have been measured), 20 foot spread. Aromatic foliage. Often planted near temples in Nepal and Tibet. Can thrive in Central Texas, which has been proven by us first hand! We have been growing these cypress trees from seed since 2009. They are very fast growing and do well in full sun even in pots. In ground, we planted two of these trees (3 ft tall) in the Cherrywood neighborhood in 2013. They are now approximately 16 ft tall and have grown so with very little care. Like most Austin soils, they are planted in black clay and very limited irrigation. They've tolerated heavy shade and everything our zone can throw at them. Having mystical ties to the serene Himalayan mountains of Kashmir, they bring an aura of resilience and tranquility to any landscape. Weeping form and silvery foliage symbolizes beauty in the face of adversity, making them a striking addition to Central Texas gardens. While their origins are far from the region, the tree’s graceful presence could serve as a beacon of positive energy in local landscapes, offering a sense of peace and harmony. In a climate where serenity is often sought amidst the hot, dry summers, they can be a perfect focal point, inviting calm and balance to gardens designed for quiet reflection or spiritual rejuvenation in Central Texas.
