The complete Eisner Award-winning epic science fiction series from writer JEFF LEMIRE (Sweet Tooth, GIDEON FALLS) and artist DUSTIN NGUYEN (DESCENDER, LITTLE MONSTERS) is collected in a softcover compendium! Young Robot boy TIM-21 and his companions struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. Written by award-winning creators, Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, Descender is a rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey pitting humanity against machines, and world against world, in a sprawling epic across the universe. Collects Descender issues #1-32 of the critically acclaimed, bestselling science fiction series. Select praise for the Descender series: "Lemire (Essex County) smoothly doles out information while amping up the tension, and the innocent, friendly character of TIM-21 creates real heart in the midst of extreme violence. Nguyen's watercolor artwork is marvelous, using the medium's transparency to create fluid and subtly lustrous pages." --Publishers Weekly, (starred review) "The art feels light and almost whimsical. I love that. I also love the colors and the choice to make certain areas (UGC) bright so the panels pop off the page, and others (mining colony, Gnish homeworld), much darker, grittier. All of it together looks like watercolors without brushstrokes. Overall, there's a little something for everyone here in Descender." --Kirkus Reviews "Your new sci-fi obsession is here, and its name is Descender...a gorgeous, moody story." --Entertainment Weekly "An emotional, imaginative new universe, lavishly brought to life by the great Dustin Nguyen." --Brian K. Vaughan, Saga "Gorgeous." --Vulture/NY Magazine "An epic sci fi tale with a huge heart." --Scott Snyder, Wytches "Remarkable... a journey that's so gripping, you'll be begging for more." --Bleeding Cool "Beautiful." --Nerdist "Exciting." --The Los Angeles Times' HeroComplex "You should be reading this book." --Kotaku "Incredible." --The Village Voice's Topless Robot "It's so beautiful." --Kelly Sue DeConnick, Bitch Planet "Deft and delightful, running from warmth to chilling, gentle to brutal." --Greg Rucka, Lazarus "Hauntingly beautiful sci-fi that manages to be both epic & powerfully intimate. Masterfully done." --Jason Aaron, Southern Bastards "What a beautiful, beautiful book. Descender is worth buying for the artwork alone, so it's almost a bonus that it tells such a compelling story about the future of humanity in a universe filled with terrors." --Charles Soule, The Oracle Year, Letter 44, Curse Words "Lemire and Nguyen just pulled the curtain back on the medium's new best science fiction heartbreaker." --Matt Kindt, Mind Mgmt "A beautiful cosmic opera and nuanced think piece, balancing the fear of the unknown with the spirit of adventure. Driven by the gorgeous visuals of artist Dustin Nguyen, Descender is a book on the rise." --IGN "I love Jeff Lemire. I love Dustin Nguyen...This is a 5 star book!" --Mark Millar, Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Hit-Girl "Bloody hell, Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's Descender looks fantastic... " --Declan Shalvey, Injection "Between Lemire's penchant for building sweeping yet personal stories and Nguyen's gorgeous, painterly art, the book is stunning to behold." --Comic Book Resources "Descender is darn good comic-book storytelling." --BLASTR "Nothing short of beautiful." --Paste MagazineShipping Notes

Bit of a snore
Format: Kindle
Mordecai Tremaine is a retired tobacconist and an amateur detective. He is invited to spend Christmas with an acquaintance in a country manor house who specifically tempts Mordecai Tremaine by hinting at a threat. This story has a period feel to it with servants, snow, secrets, and murder. The pacing is laborious. I hoped that the pace would improve when a murdered person in a Father Christmas suit is found on the floor in front of the Christmas tree. Alas, it was not to be. The character list is very long, and the characters are not well developed. This is the first book in a series featuring Mordecai Tremaine (who is only referred to by last and first names). I have a soft spot for British mysteries, including period British mysteries like those by Ngaio Marsh. While the mystery has its twists and turns as Mordecai Tremaine investigates to assist the police, it never quite clicked for me. I am not likely to read any of the other books in the series.

Enjoyable Classic mystery
Format: Kindle
I am an avid fan of vintage mysteries, and “English country house” mysteries are among my very favorites in that genre. I enjoyed this one very much and was pleased to see that there were two others available and a couple more being published. This book was my idea of a terrific cozy type mystery, and I enjoyed it very much. The Christmas setting added to its appeal.
Mordecai Tremayne, the detective in this story is just eccentric enough to be interesting without being stereotyped. He observes people, and makes deductions based on these observations, along with his knowledge of human nature. In retrospect, he is almost a bit like male version of Miss Marple, although this did not strike me as a I read the book.
This was a fun book to while away a few hours, and I look forward to reading others in this series. Highly recommended for fans of vintage mysteries, and cozies.

Leaves You Wanting More
I read about this novel right after Christmas, but I decided to order it anyway. It was not supposed to arrive until some time in February, so I was pleasantly surprised when I received it within a few days of my order. With the snow finally falling in the Chicago area, I knew this would be a good time to read this book.
The book begins with a summary of the case with somewhat overwrought language. However, as it moves on to the characters, it becomes more successful. It is important to remember that the novel was written in the 1940s, which means that we have a world that is slower paced than the 21st century. Of course we are looking at a wealthier segment of society in rural England, but this pace allows us to study the scenery and the characters more carefully. This is a world with a mansion that can house a number of guests for Christmas with these guests being able to stay over a few days with a pleasant host.
The characters are mostly forgettable with the major exception of Mordecai Tremaine as the amateur detective who helps solve the case. He is a character who is unforgettable. The ending is well plotted, and it leaves the taste of a delicious Christmas dinner in the mouth of the reader.
The author, Francis Duncan, wrote in the 1930s and 1940s, and this is the first book of his to be republished. I can only hope that other books by this author will be republished as well and republished soon or at least in time for me to read them by next Christmas. Without knowing anything about his other books, it would be nice to think that I could have other seasonal stories waiting for me in the future. The ending still remains in my mind, even several weeks after I have read the book. It would be delicious to meet Mordecai Tremaine again.

I read it and LOVE it!!
Format: Paperback
I actually read this book for December 2021 and it was the perfect murder mystery book that takes place during the wintertime! If you like the style of writing from Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie then you will love this book! Also, you don't have to worry about reading certain books before this one because the series has its own separate story for each book!
I loved the story so much that I immediate order another book from the series!!

Not as good as "Murder has a motive"
Format: Kindle
Actually, if one looks at the original copyrights of this book and "Murder has a motive" , it is clear this is the second book, not the first. In addition, the notoriety Mordecai Tremaine gained from the Dalmering case is mentioned in the text of this book.
This book moves much more slowly than " Murder has a motive" and the secrets of the suspects are harder to figure out. I did notice the murderer's slip up during the murder discovery scene. The book ends abruptly and another character who is a psychopath apparently is going to get away without punishment of his despicable behavior that has been going on for a very long time. The plot is original in nature which is a plus.
Because of the plot slowness (I trudged onward to the end) and the lack of justice for the psychopathic character, I had to remove a star for each.
