How does it work? Here is the original item description:

When one side of the D-140 cassette is full (6 hours recording), the unit automatically reverses, records an additional 6 hours and shuts off. Since the TEL-PRO 12 is VOICE-ACTIVATED, it only records when sound is detected, so tape could last for days or even weeks (depending on phone use, of course)! Simple modular connection to any analog telephone jack. System includes a handset cord connector for digital office phones also, allowing you to document your important business calls.

Records all extensions when connected to a single line (home type) phone system. Records all conversations on a single extension when connected to a digital extension phone (office type) using the handset cord adapter. This versatile unit may also be used for business conference recording or dictation. Internal microphone and a special "VOICE ZOOM" switch eliminates background noise. Unit operates on 2 "AA" batteries or AC adapter.

Plugs directly into standard modular phone jack. Voice-activated- records only when talk is present. Dual speed recording- 12 hour or 6 Hour per Tape. Automatic shut off at end of tape saves batteries. Battery indicator LED show battery charge. Variable speed playback for fast review of recordings. Excellent long play sound quality- 6 hours per side. Records all extensions on line. (single line use.) Records all lines on extension.
