Роман французского писателя Виктора Гюго 'Собор Парижской Богоматери' во многом основывался на работах шотландца Вальтера Скотта. К строгой форме предшественника Гюго добавил элементы романтической драмы и психологического романа, а фоном выставил реальные события XV века.

Впервые экранизировано произведение было в далеком 1905 году. Алис Ги и Викторен Жассе сняли немой короткий метр под названием 'Эсмеральда'. Однако настоящей классикой считается драма 1956 года с несравненными Джиной Лоллобриджидой и Энтони Куинном. А в 1996-м студия Disney создала культовую версию для юных зрителей — мультипликационный мюзикл 'Горбун из Нотр-Дама'.
