Володимир Винниченко пише про випробування Мирона і проголошує основну ідею твору: 'коли гидко, то хоч умри, але не роби, а якщо вже робиш, то роби так, щоб і розум твій оправдав те, що робиш. І забудь про те, що люди думають'.

До книжки також увійшли новела 'Момент' та повість 'На той бік', в яких автор через реалістичне змалювання дійсності говорить про щастя і плинність життя.
