General notes about this release (please note: our version may differ a little. see the comments above):
Although Duke Ellington and his Orchestra are credited for track A2 on this release, the only member of the band that had anything to do with "A Day At The Races" was vocalist Ivie Anderson. Music for the "Gabriel Sequence" of the movie, consisting of both "Who's Dat Man (It's Gabriel)" and "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm", was performed by [a281711 with [a7652968 and a studio orchestra that included [a307236 on trumpet. Track A1 (mx. 539) was recorded at an English Oriole recording session at Levy's Sound Studios, Rosslyn House, 94-98 Regent St., London, England on Friday, July 14, 1933 and was first issued on Oriole 539. Track A2 is from an MGM film recording session for "A Day at the Races" in Hollywood, CA ca. January-February 1937. Tracks A3 & A4 are from an MBS remote broadcast from the Cotton Club, 200 W. 48th St., New York, NY on Thursday, March 18, 1937. Other recordings from this performance were issued on Collector's Classics CC 16. Track A5 is from an NBC-Blue network remote broadcast from the Panther Room of the Hotel Sherman, Chicago, IL on Wednesday, July 22, 1942. Other recordings from this performance were issued on Natasha Imports NI-4016. Tracks B1 & B2 are from a recorded Blue Network Coca-Cola's Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands broadcast, episode 52. This concert was performed at Fort Dix, New Jersey on Thursday, November 19, 1942 (and not the Hotel Sherman as liner notes state). The complete concert was issued on Duke Records D-1011. Great for a bilingual family!
Sandra did an excellent job in creating a masterful Spanish version of this English favorite! We love this song and her rhythm in Spanish is excellent. Family favorite at our house.
