Flow-banded lunar melt preserved in natural form

This 10.53-gram complete individual from Adrar 013 shows the flow-banded melt texture characteristic of high-energy impact processes on the lunar surface. The specimen remains uncut and unshaped, preserving its natural exterior and internal melt structure. Dark melt matrix wraps around high-relief mineral clasts, creating strong visual contrast between the recrystallized breccia components and the frozen impact melt. The flow banding records the moment molten material cooled rapidly after a violent impact event, capturing directional movement in the melt before solidification.

Anorthositic norite and gabbro components define the mineralogy of this lunar melt breccia. The classification reflects deep lunar crustal source materials melted and mixed during impact. This specimen presents the structural evidence of that process in tangible form, with no polishing required to observe the melt relationships and clast boundaries that define lunar impact breccias.

Melt breccia structure and clast relationships

The specimen displays a heterogeneous texture where angular to subangular lithic clasts sit within a fine-grained melt matrix. Flow banding becomes visible where the matrix shows directional alignment, indicating movement during the molten phase. High-relief mineral clasts project slightly from the surface, a result of differential weathering between the harder crystalline inclusions and the softer matrix material.

Recrystallization textures throughout the matrix indicate rapid cooling from high temperatures. The anorthositic norite and gabbro clast population reflects sampling of lunar highland crust during the impact event. These clasts retain their original mineralogy while the matrix records the melting and quenching sequence. The boundary between clasts and matrix remains sharp in most areas, showing incomplete homogenization during the melt phase.

Lunar impact melt formation and Moon rock geology

Lunar melt breccias form during major impact events that generate sufficient energy to melt crustal rock. The Moon lacks atmospheric protection, allowing impactors to strike at full cosmic velocity and produce temperatures exceeding 1,200°C. Molten material mixes with solid clasts, then cools rapidly in the vacuum environment. This process creates the distinctive melt-clast textures visible in Adrar 013.

The anorthositic norite and gabbro composition indicates deep highland crust as the source region. Anorthosite dominates the lunar highlands, formed during the Moon's early differentiation when plagioclase feldspar crystals floated in a global magma ocean. Later intrusions and impacts added norite and gabbro components. When a large impact excavates this layered crust, it samples multiple rock types and creates the mixed lithology seen in this specimen. Lunar meteorites reach Earth after separate impact events eject material from the Moon's surface at escape velocity, eventually intersecting Earth's orbit. Learn About Meteorites provides background on how these rare specimens travel from planetary surfaces to terrestrial collections.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meteorite authenticated? Adrar 013 received official classification as a lunar melt breccia with anorthositic norite/gabbro composition. The Meteoritical Bulletin maintains the classification record and find documentation. This specimen includes a certificate of authenticity from Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. confirming its classification and provenance.

What does melt breccia mean? A melt breccia contains solid rock fragments (clasts) suspended in a matrix of once-molten material that cooled and solidified. In lunar melt breccias, impact energy melts crustal rock while also breaking apart surrounding material. The molten component flows around solid clasts before cooling rapidly, creating the mixed texture visible in this specimen.

What is included with this specimen? This 10.53g complete lunar individual ships with a certificate of authenticity. No display stand is included unless separately confirmed.

How do scientists know this came from the Moon? Lunar meteorites show diagnostic mineral compositions, oxygen isotope ratios, and trace element patterns that match Apollo samples and differ from all terrestrial rocks and other meteorite types. The combination of anorthositic composition, specific feldspar chemistry, and lack of water-altered minerals confirms lunar origin.

Why is this specimen uncut? Complete individuals preserve the natural exterior and three-dimensional structure of the meteorite as it traveled through space and survived atmospheric entry. Collectors value uncut specimens for their natural form and the scientific information retained in the intact structure. This piece shows melt textures and clast relationships without modification.

Acquiring lunar material for private collections

Lunar meteorites represent the only legal pathway for private individuals to own Moon rocks. Apollo samples remain U.S. government property, and Luna mission material belongs to Russia. Meteorites from the Moon that fall naturally on Earth can be collected, classified, and sold. This creates rare opportunities to acquire genuine lunar material with full documentation.

The 10.53-gram mass of this Adrar 013 individual places it in a size range suitable for serious planetary specimen collections. The complete natural form preserves the exterior surface and internal structure without cuts or modification. Flow-banded melt textures remain visible across the specimen, offering both scientific interest and visual appeal. Lunar melt breccias with preserved flow structures and clear clast-matrix relationships demonstrate the impact processes that have shaped the Moon's surface for billions of years. Lunar Meteorites in our collection represent verified specimens with full classification documentation.

I got 6 years use out of it and just re-ordered a new one! Best grill cover I’ve ever purchased.
Size: 50 Inch, Color: black, Size: 50 Inch, Color: black
Very durable! I noticed earlier this spring that mine was starting to rip after several strong spring wind storms. I knew I had had it for several years but I wasn’t sure how long. I went in my orders page and saw that I ordered it back in 2020 so I got 6 years out of it!! Note that it stays outside on the deck all year round, and that includes during Northeast US winters with frigid temperatures and snow and I only now started to see the tears in it this spring. The tear started at the top of the grill, and actually started falling apart more after I touched it. Refer to the attached photos of mine after 6 years. I think it’s very durable for sitting outside for 6 years and only now only starting to show wear . You can also see how it didn’t really fade despite getting full afternoon sunlight. The velcro ties at the bottom, are also a plus as far as getting it to stay in place and not blow off. That’s why I definitely just repurchased the same one. Hopefully, I will get at least 6 years out of the new one when it arrives tomorrow.

Water Shoes for 3-Week Trip to Amazon, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos
Size: 10.5, Color: Blue/Grey
Bought these shoes (along with a pair of Merrell Gore-TEX Moab Speed 2 GTX) for a three-week trip through some pretty eclectic weather and terrain. I selected these over some much more expensive brands and was very happy with my decision. I typically wear a size 11 athletic shoe (I measure a 10.5), but the 11–11.5 Humtto shoes were way too large and good not get a good fit. I returned that pair, and downsized to the 10.5. They fit me perfectly. Before leaving on the trip I used them to work out at the gym and do some light hiking. They were first seriously tested in the Amazon. The soles provide pretty darn good traction, and they can be worn with or without socks. Because of their hiking and quick drying capabilities, I ended up using these shoes about 50% of the trip. They look great, are comfortable, can be adjusted for fit, and have a decent (medium) arch and heel padding. They are not zero drop from heel to toe, but pretty close. The EVA midsole and memory foam insole for cushioning is great, but do not make the mistake I made by heating it on a heater to accelerate drying. It warped the insole a bit (they are still usable). These are great and survived some pretty extensive testing throughout Peru and Ecuador. If you are stepping into some pretty questionable conditions, these sure are a great back up to your hiking shoes when it may get sloshy and dry shoes are required for the next day.

Excellent shoes for what you’re buying them.
Size: 12, Color: Black
My 2nd pair of this brand. These are awesome. Easy to come off and get on. They stay cool in the summer, they are comfortable with or without socks. I use them in lake and pool, and they still look new. Very inexpensive, and for a change they look actually nicer in person than in the photos. I dont know how they would be doing any athletics but for everything else, including walking a lot and standing for hours, they worked great.

Surprisingly awesome!
Size: 10.5, Color: Dark Gray/Beige
I have only been wearing these for a few days so I may have to revise the review over time, but so far these shoes are absolutely outstanding. If you owned and enjoyed the original Salomon TechAmphibians, later ruined with new designs by the maker, these are their natural heirs. I took a chance on these shoes since the design is very similar. They are lightweight and comfortable and they provide great footbed support whether loose or tightly laced. Like the early TechAmphibians, they also have the cool feature of a collapsing heel upper, allowing their use as slides. They are also half the price that the Salomons sold even 10 or more years ago. The sole has an aggressive tread pattern and is quite grippy wet or dry. I measure as 10.5 D on the shoe size device but almost no shoes in that size fit me in the last few years. I got the 11-11.5 size first but it was swimming on me. 10.5 fits well with a bit of extra room so I can wear them with or without socks.

Great shoes
Size: 10, Color: Grey, Size: 10, Color: Grey
I got 2 pairs of these specifically for a water rafting trip. The first pair was a little large, so I went down a half size ( and gave the larger pair to my son). They are comfortable, even for wide feet - although after a long day of use in the water, there was some chaffing on the outsides of my feet. It loosened up a bit across my wide foot, after getting wet. These worked great! They have adjustable strap across the back, that pulls tight on the outside. the laces are elastic and tighten by pulling and then pushing the stopper down onto the laces. They didn't slip (loosen) but, to get them tight, I had excessive amount of laces hanging out (had to tuck them into the tongue.
